Annual Report  2010

How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world! - Anne Frank

Compassionate Crusaders Trust

Compassionate Crusaders has come a long way since it started out on its journey in November 1993 with a corpus of only Rs 1,000/-

This year has been a milestone on that journey. We have had no financial help from the Government or related agencies like MP/MLALAD. Similarly there have been no corporate donations or fund raising events. Yet we have improved on our balance sheet without any significant financial liabilities. Most important we have never compromised on the quality of our service to the poor suffering animals of our city, which is after all the very reason for our existence.

Our help has come solely from the goodwill and support of the people of Calcutta, a city famous for its warmth and kindness. We salute you for your attitude and for your awareness, and recognize the vital role you play in the success of our endeavours.

Never assume that the recipient of your charity is lower than you are, as he may very well be an angel in disguise"--a sentiment that captures the worldview of Compassionate Crusaders Trust, Ms.Sharon St. Joan, International Community Editor, Best Friends Network, USA. had quoted our supporter Mrs.Veena and and her daughter Ms. Ruchi Kohli  of Columbia ,USA

A special mention must be made about the two most compassionate souls Mrs. Kim Bartlett and Mr. Merritt Cifton , the driving force of the Animal People (U.S.A.) news magazine for their cooperation and unfailing support. ‘Animal People’ is the world’s most widely read international monthly on animal welfare/rights. It is also one of the most highly respected because they give a ‘Watchdog’ page, analyzing the work and expenditure of animal welfare groups round the world. Readers know that everything written has been personally verified, and is authentic. People who wish to contribute to helping animals all over the world find this particularly helpful, and people like us are deeply grateful because of the donations we get from readers of ‘Animal People’.

Ms.Michelle Lohutko wrote, Hi Debasis, I am really sorry to here about the troubles you are having there. I raised some money selling prints in Cambridge.  Joellen (Joellen Secondo Somerville, USA) sold them for me there at a booth there that she had. Here's the write up for my new show opening in April at Earth and Soul gallery (on Washington Ave, Portland, Maine) I hope everyone is well, Michelle  New England  USA.

Mr.Teja Pribac of New South Wales, Australia and  Mr.Chris Neaves of Naples, Mr.Sukanto Sinha of San Francisco, Ms.Fay Forman of New York, all from USA have extended their help for the mutes in our care.

We would like to mention  a rare compassionate gesture of  Shri. Basant Kumar and Dr.(Smt.) Sarala Birla ; sending a donation without waiting for a ‘formal’ letter of appeal!

Since the beginning of this year-2009, Compassionate Crusaders Trust have the sole responsibility of treatment/drinking water of the Maidan-ponies, rescue of domestic/wild animals around the city, animal control and critically important Animal Birth Control/Anti Rabies program for dogs & cats of the city’s important hospitals and high-security  Police & Military areas.

Like last year, The Royal Calcutta Turf Club have already come forward with a very generous donation to support us. They have also been freely supplying drinking water to our Water Tanker for the animals since the day one. We mention with gratitude, the kind gesture of the Hastings Chapel authorities for allowing us to park our tanker round the year.

We heartily welcome Mr.K.P.S. Menon, former Ambassador and Foreign Secretary as our Patron. His advice is “Fight against corruption. It is eating the soul of our country…... corruption and inefficiency have become the hallmarks of our functioning. It takes weeks to get even the simplest job done”. These words are most relevant at this crucial juncture in the history of ‘Animal-Nature-Environment’ movement which is infested with all kinds of misanthropes and sectarian activists trying to divide the society in the name of ‘special’ status for this animal or that, only to meet their own selfish ends, defeating the basic tenet of compassion. Shri Ramakrishna’s idea of seeing the supreme soul inside the body of all living beings, seems to be losing out!

At our formal launching, Mother Teresa wrote "This brings you my prayer and God’s blessing, for the purpose of spreading awareness that Social Welfare and Environmental issues are all interlinked. Let us remember that Animals are God’s creatures. I assure you of my prayers that his effort may benefit all. Let us be God’s love to all we meet.  God bless you. M. Teresa MC."

Our honourable Patron’s gracious wife Mrs. Lalitha Menon, a devout follower of Shri Ramakrishna, has become our Life Member as an expression of solidarity with our ‘cause of the mutes’. Mrs. Zarin Patel, our long time volunteer, has shifted to Singapore but became our Life Member to keep her compassion flowing!

One heartening note from UNESCO laureate educationist Sister Cyril. My Dear Debashish , Many thanks for your email of 16th February. I write to thank you very much for the information and express my happiness that you are still looking after the animals.  My very warmest regards and prayers  Yours in J.C - S.M Cyril

I would also like to thank the generous family of Mr. Anwarul Islam and his compassionate wife Mrs. Majeda Islam, who made it possible for us to beautify garden Eden for pets, Karuna Kunj. Thanks also to their son Mr. Areful Islam’s firm, The Calcutta Construction Company, who sponsored the extension of the Cattery and The Saturday Club’s kind donation of the play-things like Jungle Gym, Slide, Swing  for the enjoyment of the cats at Karuna Kunj cattery, transforming it into a  Feline Disney Land. One can look it up on our website, http://www.animalcrusaders.org/. with videos showing the daily activities there.

The ‘Memorial to Every Loving Pet’ stands in all its gracious serenity, with the touching  poem that brings a lump to the animal lovers’ throat!

After his visit to us, Dr. Manu Chandaria ,the philanthropist from Nairobi, wrote back gracefully “Please accept my congratulations for the wonderful work you are doing and for an excellent team you have created. I wish many more people would have the same compassion as you and your team has.”

Having received so much help from so many quarters – like the Ahimsa Foundation , U.S.A., who sponsored the maintenance of Karuna Kunj for more than two years or The Parks Foundation, U.S.A. for our PetXpress ( Mobile Trauma Care unit) & BSNL for sponsoring its launching. We cannot help writing of how much their support has meant to us, emotionally as well as practically!

Philanthropists and social workers (including the medical fraternity) seldom realize that to help the health and economy of a society, it is vital to focus on preventive (rather than curative) health care. The truncated approach and a myopic focus of the human race is resulting in our losing humane values.

There are over 40 zoonotic diseases of which animals are carriers. Transmitted from animal to human, crossing the species barrier and hitting at other species (including humans) is a grim warning of the consequences of neglecting the importance of animal welfare.. The lives of millions of humans in developing countries can be improved substantially by preventing the source of the disease instead of spending several times more to cure the diseased people after they have been infected. Diseases spread through earth, water, food and air. Other common zoonotic diseases are T.B., Anthrax, Diphtheria, Encephalitis, Worms, Hepatitis, Plague, etc.

Social Networking through web has taken off with gusto. A Facebook Fan Page of the Animal Crusaders is created by Mr.Paul Suit of Baltimore USA, Dwaipayan became our active member as a child of five in our early days, now in his college, has created an Orkut community named Lovers of animal crusaders. We thank them both!

Sputnik, my pet Chihuahua joined Facebook on September 20, 2009 and added significant ‘punch’ to many of our international campaigns. Sputnik Sylvells Mickeys Mustard has 5000 friends from across the globe. One of his friends from Brazil, Marcelo Henrique Cury commented “This dog is the symbol of activism in the world. Veg hug!”

Symbiotic crusade for compassion continues. Like previous years, a social communication Intern had a stint with the Compassionate Crusaders in the summer of 2009. Ms.Vedika Arora, Media trainee of the Batch of 2011,  nominated by the Symbiosis Institute of Media & Communication, Symbiosis International University, Pune. Vedika has created a complete package of excellent campaign materials like videos, posters etc. Kudos to Vedika!

The media has been extremely supportive even though we could never offer them any thing other than our sincerity for the cause of compassion. As Mahatma Gandhi said- Mother Earth has enough for everybody’s need but there can never be enough for everybody’s greed!  I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the media personnel whose innate sensitivity and skillful pen and camera voiced needs of the mutes and the Compassionate Crusaders’ endeavor in creating a kinder world.

The Telegraph ‘s coverage of our emergency pet care everyday and also in their Metro Guide is a real boon, because it is one of one of the most widely read newspapers in the city and elsewhere. As also Hindustan Times’ daily publication of Compassionate Crusaders’ Animal Helpline. Many pets have benefited by this action of theirs.

Late Jyoti Basu’s departure to the eternity has been an irreparable loss to our cause and a personal loss of guardian for me.

Passing away of Late Vinod Kumar Neotia has also created a void, not easy to be filled!

Mr. Viren J. Shah, retired as Governor of West Bengal and returned to Mumbai, but neither he, nor his charming wife Anjanaben have retired from our hearts or from the cause. This year he expressed his wish to relinquish his position as our Patron. Both Mr. & Mrs. Shah are remembered with gratitude.

Mr. Russi Mody has retired from public life, but he continues to give his precious words of advice whenever we need!

Our association with RSPCA, U.K. continues.

The Animal lovers of Kolkata can boast as the only METRO CITY in the country to have a 24 Hour “ANIMAL HELPLINE” in two prominent dailies!

Like last year we are going to post our yearlong activity details and audited accounts on our website.. Our website www.animalcrusaders.org  displays the Videos of some of our activities… we hope to keep on adding more!
